9.2: ROBOCON 10, the 10th Anniversary Convention
(Reprinted, originally from Todd Hill)
ROBOCON 10 OCTOBER 6-8, 1995 - GRAND HOTEL - ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA
PROGRESS REPORT
Welcome to our first progress report; on behalf of the staff
of ROBOCON 10, I want to personally thank you for your interest
in being a part of this convention. We've all come a long
way in the ten years since ROBOTECH's premiere in March of
1985. Over this past decade, Japanimation fandom in Europe
and the Western Hemisphere has grown and prospered into a
multi-million dollar industry. Today, dozens of companies
are marketing and promoting this art form to the masses, with
more and more titles entering the market everyday.
There is no doubt that ROBOTECH made an immeasurable contribution
to the Japanese Animation "boom" that resulted in the late
80's and still shows no signs of slowing down. Over the weekend
of October 6-8, 1995, we hope that ROBOCON 10 will help to
serve as a fitting tribute to this landmark animated series.
Among the activities we have planned are panels with the
voice actors, people who worked behind the scenes, those involved
in creating the music, and various representatives of the
american anime industry. Please write and tell us what you
would be interested in seeing.
WE ARE OFFICIAL!
AS OF MARCH 25, HARMONY GOLD HAS ENDORSED US AS THE OFFICIAL
TENTH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION OF ROBOTECH. THEIR ASSISTANCE
WILL HELP US BRING VARIOUS LICSENSEES AND ROBOTECH AFFILIATED
COMPANIES TO OUR CONVENTION. THESE INCLUDE: DEL REY, PLAYMATES,
ACADEMY COMICS AND PALLADIUM BOOKS. THIS IS TRULY GOING TO
BE A ROBOTECH FEST!
Confirmed Guests of Honor :
CARL MACEK - The visionary behind the ROBOTECH television
series, Carl served as the show's producer and story editor.
In 1985, in association with Harmony Gold, Carl combined three
separate and unrelated Japanese Animation shows (MACROSS,
SOUTHERN CROSS, and MOSPEADA) into the most compelling animated
drama series ever seen on american television. Carl is currently
the president of Streamline Pictures Inc., which continues
to market Japanese Animation to english-speaking audiences
worldwide.
ARDWIGHT CHAMBERLAIN - As one of the series staff writers,
Ardwight brought his considerable experience as a screenwriter,
author and playwrite to the show and has also worked on many
other projects with Carl Macek and Streamline Pictures. Along
with his other work, Ardwight is also an experienced voice
actor. In addition to providing the voice of Zor Prime on
ROBOTECH, he is currently featured as the enigmatic and mysterious
Vorlon Ambassador Kosh on BABYLON 5.
STEVE KRAMER - As the series' script editor, Steve Kramer
was charged with overseeing the work of the series' staff
writers throughout all eighty five episodes. An accomplished
screenwriter, Steve has also lent his voice talents to several
of Carl Macek's projects; most notably as ROBOTECH's own Sergeant
Angelo Dante.
JOHN MORTAROTTI - As music editor, John was charged with
placing the over three and a half hours of source music throughout
each episode of ROBOTECH. With over a quarter of a century's
experience in film music, John has garnered several Emmy nominations,
most recently for his work as music supervisor for TEENAGE
MUTANT NINJA TURTLES, a project that he has worked on for
the last seven years. An expert in the field of film music,
John boasts the largest private collection of library and
early television music in the world.
ARLON OBER - Serving as orchestrator, conductor, composer
and songwriter, Arlon Ober was instrumental in the creation
of ROBOTECH's immensely popular and widely demanded musical
score. A veteran in the film music industry, Arlon's other
credits include work on the films FREEJACK, DEEP STAR SIX,
and numerous others.
TONY OLIVER - As the voice behind Rick Hunter, Tony Oliver
created one of the show's most memorable characters. Currently
with Saban Entertainment, Tony is the Supervising Producer
of the blockbuster hit series MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS.
ULPIO MINUCCI - One of the driving forces behind the creation
of the ROBOTECH musical score. His rousing main title is one
of the most memorable themes in american science fiction,
instantly conjuring up the image of the grand space epic for
which it was composed for. A former international news correspondant,
Ulpio has spent much of his life within the international
music industry and is a member of the Academy of Motion Pictures,
Arts, and Sciences.
REBA WEST - With the unforgettable voice of Lynn Minmay,
Reba West helped create one of ROBOTECH's most recognizable
characters. In addition to providing the voice behind her
character, Reba also doubled as Minmay's singing voice.
EDDIE FRIERSON - The voice behind Lynn Kyle, ROBOTECH's
resident hippie. Kyle ended up being one of the show's most
reviled character's, but Eddie swears that the scripts didn't
start out that way.
JAMES LUCENO - One-half of Jack McKinney (along with Brian
Daley), James is the co-author of all the ROBOTECH novels,
from the original series, thru the Sentinels, End Of The Circle
and still more forthcoming books.
MELORA HART - The voice actress of the lovely and enigmatic
character Musica, from Southern Cross. $lt;AKA, "That alien
dame," Angelo Dante to Bowie > Ironically, Steve Kramer
is married to Melora Hart.
JOHN AND JASON WALTRIP - The tag-team duo from Eternity
and now Academy comics who have kept the Robotech fires burning
every month with their comic book rendition of Robotech II:
The Sentinels have tenatively announced their intention to
attend. Their comic book is the longest running Robotech comic
title in history, and is selling steadily to this day.
We are currently in the process of contacting many of the
other ROBOTECH staff and cast members. We will be announcing
many more Guests of Honor in the coming months. STAY TUNED.
